A federal judge has granted a temporary restraining order requested by the Colorado Secretary of State against the United States Postal Service for distributing mailers with incorrect voting information. Secretary of State Jena Griswold filed suit on September 12th after receiving an official USPS mailer that instructs voters to request absentee or mail-in ballots.
Unlike other states, Colorado automatically mails ballots to all active registered voters. In a social media post, Griswold explained that Secretaries of States had hoped to prevent confusion by requesting to review drafts of the mailer. They were rejected by Postmaster General DeJoy, as was the Secretary of State’s request that the mailers not be distributed in Colorado.
Griswold went on to say, “Confusing voters about mail ballots in the middle of a pandemic is unacceptable. It can undermine confidence in the election & suppress votes.”
The temporary restraining order will be in effect until September 22. In the meantime, Griswold stated she will ask a federal judge to order General DeJoy pay for a mailer with correct election information.
